Minceirs Whiden is pleased to highlight the launch of the Irish Government’s National Traveller and Roma Inclusion Strategy II (2024-2028), a crucial step towards fostering a fairer and more equitable society for the Traveller and Roma communities in Ireland.
This strategy, spearheaded by the DCEDIY, was developed in partnership with various government departments, agencies, and, importantly, Traveller and Roma organisations, ensuring that the lived experiences and unique challenges faced by our communities are its core focus.
Key Pillars of the Strategy:
NTRIS II identifies and outlines concrete actions to address a wide array of systemic challenges. Its focus areas are comprehensive, aiming to create real, tangible change:
-
Combating Racism and Discrimination: Dedicated efforts will be made to challenge prejudice, including anti-racism training for government and agency staff.
-
Children and Young People: Ensuring better outcomes and support for the next generation.
-
Gender Equality: Promoting equal opportunities and addressing specific challenges faced by Traveller and Roma women.
-
Health and Wellbeing: With a commitment to improving health outcomes, including the development of a specific plan for Roma health.
-
Employment and Enterprise: Initiatives designed to increase participation in training and employment opportunities.
-
Accommodation: Addressing critical housing needs within the communities.
-
Education: Striving for improved educational outcomes and increased participation at all levels.
-
Culture, Heritage, and Identity: Recognising and celebrating the rich culture, heritage, and identity of Traveller and Roma communities.
-
Participation, Empowerment, Cooperation, and Accountability: Strengthening community involvement and ensuring transparency in the strategy’s implementation.
Action and Oversight:
The strategy will be driven by two-year action plans, clearly detailing objectives, timelines, and responsible parties. A dedicated committee, chaired by the relevant Minister and crucially including representation from Traveller and Roma organisations, will oversee its delivery. Progress will be regularly monitored through quarterly updates, annual reports, and an annual forum for information exchange and accountability.
NTRIS II is designed to work in synergy with other vital initiatives, such as the National Plan Against Racism and the National Traveller Health Action Plan. Its ultimate goal is to galvanise a whole-of-government approach to deliver the best possible outcomes for Travellers and Roma.
Minceirs Whiden welcomes this strategic commitment and looks forward to working collaboratively to ensure the successful implementation of NTRIS II, moving closer to a society where Traveller and Roma communities can thrive.
